According to Amazon, an early-morning "networking event" sent its EC2 cloud service into a state of online disarray, completely stranding its customers websites.

From the CNN Article:

Jason Glassberg, co-founder of security outfit Casaba LLC, called the issue "a big ol' black eye" for Amazon.

"Reliability is probably the No. 1 concern with cloud services," he said. "Amazon has worked long and hard to convince folks that their services were robust. This does not help the cause."

ICANN released its 2010 Annual Report this morning (JST).  New gTLD applicants and users looking to take advantage of a plethora of new domain name extensions might be wondering what the report said about the topic. Well, not much but Chairman of the ICANN Board, Peter Dengate Thrush has this to say:

Enormous progress on ICANN’s biggest project, the introduction of new generic top-level domains.

Since the Board began the implementation phase in June 2008, the New gTLD Program has been the subject of at least 13 Board resolutions and a special workshop in Trondheim in August where a further 13 decisions were made. Many issues remain to be resolved, but conclusion of the implementation phase, expected in 2011, will mean substantial changes to the face of the Internet.

.SiTE can attest to the the work completed in the past year on the New gTLD program, as we attended all ICANN meetings and witnessed the process developing. We feel like 2011 will be the year when SiTE and other applicants can finally submit their applications to ICANN.  

The report goes on to point out that the ICANN team successfully resolved trademark issues to enable the program to move forward.  

Of course...then there are the numbers.

Domain Security Company LLC, a Wisconsin-based Limited Liability Corporation has announced its intention to run the .bank top-level domain.   The company has also expressed interest in running .secure. 
The company states that only banks will be able to register and maintain a domain name registration under the .bank top-level domain.  Further, the company believes that the introduction of a .bank TLD will protect consumers from falling victim to phishing attacks.  
“The staff at .bank will be working every day to ensure that your domain is not compromised. This will include scanning the internet on a regular basis to look for servers “pretending” to be your server (reverse DNS lookups) as well as looking for spoofed websites by using image recognition software to spot someone spoofing a .bank certificate.”.

Would you feel better about doing your banking online at hsbc.bank or chase.bank?

Time Magazine wrote a piece on New gTLDs this past weekend and boldly stated "later this month [ICANN] will begin the process of accepting applications for new domains."

I suppose this statement isn't entirely incorrect. After all, I guess one could argue that everything up to this point, for the past three years, has been part of the process of accepting applications; the "accepting" part just hasn't started yet.

.SiTE and many other New gTLD applicants are anxiously awaiting the ICANN Board to finalize the rule book for applicants as well as commit to concrete timelines so the likes of, .Music, .SiTE, .Green., .Eco, and others can help usher in a new era of the Internet.
